We’ve worked with makeup artist Yae Pascoe on every ME+EM shoot for years; she is a master of natural, glowing makeup that makes an impact on screen. We wanted to learn how to recreate it at home for those endless Zoom calls, so we asked her to break down exactly how she does it. Here is her step-by-step guide to creating the ME+EM look.

Step 1.  Prep skin

Apply a thin layer of makeup base with your fingers and blend it into your skin, not forgetting to apply product to your neck as well. This helps your foundation stick to your skin and last all day long. My personal favourite is Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré Nourishing Moisturiser.

Step 2.  FOUNDATION

Apply foundation by dotting it around where you want or feel you need it, then blend in well with your fingers. I always use Chanel’s Vitalumière Aquaultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup SPF 15. You only need half a push of the pump to start off with - you can build up more layers if you still think need it.

Step 3.  Concealer

Apply concealer using a patting motion on the dark areas of your face such as underneath your eyes, around your nose and on the chin, then blend with your fingers or a slightly damp sponge. I recommend the Radiant Creamy Concealer from NARS. You only need tiny amount of concealer (the size of your little fingernail), building up more layers if you still think you need it. Don’t put concealer too close to your eyes though, as this will look unnatural.

Step 4. Blusher

Apply cream or liquid blush and use a few taps with your fingers on your skin to blend it in. A liquid or cream blush like Bobbi Brown’s Pot Rouge will always looks more natural than a powder blush. On Ishi and Vanessa, I use the shade Powder Pink lightly tapped onto cheeks and lips. When choosing a shade, go for one that’s slightly deeper colour than your natural lip colour.

Step 5. Eyeshadow

Use an eyeshadow primer like Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion before applying eyeshadow to help it stick to your skin and last all day long.  Again, a cream eyeshadow will create a more natural look than a powder eyeshadow.
Chanel’s Les Beiges Healthy Glow Natural Eyeshadow Palette in medium is one of my favourite palettes as it always gives an effortlessly natural and beautiful look, great for everyday when you’re working from home or in the office.

Step 6. Eyebrows

If you have any gaps in your eyebrows, just fill them in with an eyebrow pencil or powder, then stroke with a clean eyebrow brush to blend it in. This helps keep the look natural and avoids your brows looking like they are made of seaweed! Use an eyebrow gel like Glossier’s Boy Brow to finish and set.

Step 7. Mascara

Before applying mascara, I swear by Shu Uemura’s eyelash curler to give a really good curl! Using Clinique’s High Impact Mascara, remove any excess product from the wand on to your hand or a tissue and apply through your lashes. Always focus on putting more mascara on the roots of your eyelashes so that they don’t look clogged up, that way you’ll look like you have naturally gorgeous eyelashes.

Step 8.  Lips

Simply add lip balm if you don’t feel that you need lipstick, but if your lips look pale and you want a little enhancement, you can also use your blusher as lip tint. A lip pencil is good for defining your lip line or filling in your lip before applying lipstick. Mac’s Lip Pencil in Subculture is a great one.

Step 9.  Powder

Always use a translucent powder around the centre of your face to take the shine off; I like Laura Mercier’s Translucent Loose Setting Powder. But be conservative - applying too much can be ageing.
You can also create some subtle shading with Tom Ford’s Shade and Illuminate Palette, like I’ve done on Steffi. Starting near the ear, push the brush along underside of the cheekbone. Blend it in with brush until it looks unnoticeable.
