The mask-friendly make-up guide
There are three main issues that contribute to makeup smudging off while you’re wearing a face mask: friction between your mask and skin, humidity building up under your mask, and your skin type.

The key to tackling the issue is minimal layers. Applying a moisturiser, sunscreen, primer, foundation, concealer, face powder…means a greater risk of your make-up breaking up towards the end of day. Instead, try to use products that have multiple benefits, like an oil-free SPF primer that can moisturise as well as help make-up last. A fixing spray is also key to keeping everything in place.

1. Prep

You need to make sure that your skin is prepped properly. That means washed and clean. You can skip moisturiser because a primer has moisturising benefits, but if you have really dry skin you can apply a thin layer where you think need it. Choose a primer carefully depending on your skin type – and don’t forget to apply it to your neck.

Yae recommends:

For dry skin | Bobbi Brown Extra Repair Moisturizing Balm SPF 25

For normal skin | Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer

For oily skin | NARS Smooth & Protect Primer SPF 50

For combination skin | NARS Radiance Primer SPF 35

2. Lips

Do lips after prepping your skin as it will help the colour adhere.Start with a moisturising lip primer to help the colour stick to your lips, then apply your lip liner. You can stop there, or if you want some extra colour, rub a liquid lipstick or lip tint onto your lips well using your fingers. Use tissue paper to remove excess product and when no product transfers to the tissue, it’s set. Avoid lip gloss if you can.

Yae recommends:

Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Primer

NYX Cosmetics Slim Lip Pencil

NARS Power Matte Lip Pigment

3. Concealer

Concealer also does the job of foundation, which means medium-buildable coverage and a light, smooth texture that’s easy to apply.Using your fingers or a damp sponge, pat concealer onto the dark areas of your face such as underneath your eyes, between your brows, around your nose and chin, and where you think you need it. If you still want to apply foundation, look for one that has a light, buildable texture.

Yae recommends:

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

NARS Sheer Glow Foundation

4. Blusher

A liquid blusher that sits on your skin nicely is great for mask-friendly makeup. Just blend it in with a few taps of your finger. It can double up as a lip tint as well which is handy.

Yae recommends:
Benefit Benetint Cheek & Lip Stain

5. Eyes

Eyeshadow primer is really important for tackling the heat and humidity caused by face masks.I’d also recommend using a waterproof or oil-proof mascara to avoid smudging and panda eyes.
It’s nice to see colourful eyeshadow and eyeliner when a face mask is on, so here’s where you can have fun.
Yae recommends:

NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base
Fenty Flypencil Longwear Pencil Eyeliner

Glossier Lash Slick

No7 Stay Perfect Mascara

6. Eyebrows

Fill in your brows with an eyebrow pencil or powder, then stroke with an eyebrow mascara to set it in place.Yae recommends:

Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo

Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel

7. Face Powder

Put a tiny amount of translucent powder onto your T-zone and around your nose. But be conservative as too much powder can be aging.

8. Fixing spray

Once your makeup is done, use a spray to fix your makeup in place. Give the bottle a good shake, hold it at a 10” (20-30cm) distance from your face and spray. Let it dry and set naturally and you’re ready to go.
