Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, NetflixBased on the August Wilson play of the same name, this film is set during a 1927 recording session with the ‘Mother of the Blues’ Ma Rainey, played by Oscar-winner Viola Davis. Already garnering plenty of awards-season buzz, it also stars the late Chadwick Boseman in what would become his final role.

The Midnight Sky, NetflixGeorge Clooney directs, produces and stars in this post-apocalyptic tale of a scientist racing to warn a group of astronauts not to return to earth following a global catastrophe. It also stars Felicity Jones, whose pregnancy was written into the role for her.

Cinderella: A Comic Relief Pantomime for Christmas, BBCWe understand that the word ‘pantomime’ may inspire horror in many but stay with us. This special take on a Christmas tradition stars Olivia Colman, Helena Bonham-Carter and The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy in the titular role. And it’s all in the name of raising money for Comic Relief, supporting those who desperately need it this year.

Sylvie’s Love, AmazonThis moving period film follows the love story of a young couple over the course of six years, from their first meeting in New York in the summer of 1957. A feast for the eyes and the soul, it’s the perfect escape from grey winter days.

Bridgerton, NetflixThe period series comes from the mind of Shona Rhimes of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal fame. Narrated by the iconic Julie Andrews, it’s a lavish affair of good-looking people in good-looking settings.

Black Narcissus, BBCThis three-part series will be aired over consecutive nights, a dark and dramatic adaptation of Rumer Godden’s 1939 novel. A group of nuns based in a remote Himalayan palace are faced with unforeseen obstacles to their calling.
1st January

The Serpent, BBCThis miniseries featuring Jenna Coleman tells the true story of conman and serial killer Charles Sobhraj and his arrest in the mid-1970s. Christmassy? Perhaps not, but a potentially welcome antidote to festive fatigue.
